Record inflow of remittances from abroad.
Record inflow in 2025: 849.3 million euros arrived from the diaspora
Preliminary data show that in 2025, Montenegro received 849.3 million euros from the diaspora. This amount represents a slight increase compared to the previous year.
According to preliminary data from the Central Bank of Montenegro, the total inflow of remittances from abroad in 2025 amounted to 849.33 million euros. This amount represents an increase of 5.72 million euros or 0.68 percent compared to 2024.
The largest inflow of remittances was recorded from Italy, the United States of America, Great Britain, Ireland, Serbia and Germany. The structure of inflows by country remains similar to previous years, says director of the Directorate for the Balance of Payments Boris Kilibarda.
Kilibarda explained that the data refers to the countries from which the payment was made. For example, if the transfer is made through a payment institution based in Ireland, the statistics record that the source of the remittance is Ireland, regardless of where the money originally originated.
Preliminary data indicate that remittances from abroad represent a significant additional cash flow for a certain number of households. These remittances make it easier to settle obligations and increase the purchasing power of the population.
The growth of personal consumption, according to Kilibarda, encourages the development of the trade and service sector. It can also influence domestic companies to expand production, improve supply and hire more labor.
The total inflow of remittances from abroad in 2024 amounted to 843.62 million euros, which represented 11.31 percent of the gross domestic product. These data indicate a significant contribution of remittances to the economy of Montenegro.
According to the 2023 Census, 44,017 Montenegrin citizens reside abroad. This figure further emphasizes the importance of remittances for the economic stability and development of the country.
In 2025, the inflow of remittances from abroad reached a record level, which indicates the increasing connection of the Montenegrin diaspora with the mother country. This trend may be the result of increased economic activity and stability in the host countries, which allows Montenegrin citizens to send more money to their families.
In addition, Kilibarda emphasized that remittances have a chain effect on the economy. An increase in household income leads to an increase in consumption, which directly affects trade and services, and thus overall economic growth.
In the context of global economic trends, remittances from abroad are becoming increasingly important for maintaining the stability of the Montenegrin economy. These financial transfers help reduce poverty and improve the living standards of many families.
According to data from 2024, remittances accounted for a significant part of the gross domestic product, which indicates their key role in the economy. This trend continues in 2025, when remittances reached a new record.
Despite the challenges facing the global economy, the Montenegrin diaspora remains an important source of financial support for households in the country. This support not only helps in everyday life, but also contributes to the development of local communities.
In the future, it is expected that remittances from abroad will continue to play a key role in the economy of Montenegro. Given current trends, it is possible that the inflow of remittances will increase, which could further strengthen economic stability and growth.
